ASEAN Essay Contest

The Embassies of the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the Republic of Argentina (the Kingdom of Thailand, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Malaysia, the Republic of Indonesia and the Republic of the Philippines), and the School of Oriental Studies of Salvador University through its course of Southeast Asian History of the Bachelor of Oriental studies and the Institute of International Relations of the National University of La Plata through its Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), together with the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations of the Catholic University of Córdoba through its course of International Relations History and Argentine-SEA Research Project of 21st Century University, with also the sponsorship of the Latinamerican Association for Asian and African Studies - Argentina, announce the call for undergraduate students and graduate scholars to participate in the First Edition of the ASEAN Essay Contest.
Subjects


The Contest aims fundamentally to encourage the development of academic analysis and researches to deepen the knowledge about the countries of Southeast Asia which belonng to the ASEAN bloc.
The subjects or themes of the papers should focus on to the countries of ASEAN as a whole, its political, religious, socio-cultural, economic and historical dynamics and its developments in the past fifty years, and / or their relations with the Republic of Argentina and Mercosur.

Suggested subjects or themes are as follow:

• Projects of Regionalization of Southeast Asia and their relations with ASEAN (MaPhilIndo, ASA, SEATO)
• ASEAN: origin and historical development, processes, dynamics and types of integration, international political and economic positioning, key opportunities and challenges, AEC 2015
• Relationships with other actors and in regional forums (ASEAN +1, +3, +5, APEC, WTO, UN, among others)
• Republic of Argentina and Mercosur relations with ASEAN

Participants

Will be eligible to participate and submit their papers undergraduate students and graduate scholars from public and private universities nationwide.

Guidelines for Submission

The following guidelines that are detailed next are absolutely strict and those papers that do not conform to them will be out of the contest.

• The essay must be unpublished and original, having a minimum length of 10 pages and a maximum length of 15 pages, numbered consecutively (excluding title page, footnotes and bibliography) and written in Times New Roman font, size 12 and 1.5 line space, in Word format, using Letter paper size (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm). It can be written in Castilian or English.

• The essay must be submitted as an essay or a monograph, divided into a front page showing the title, an introduction, a body and a conclusion (besides the bibliography according to APA referencing system). It may be submitted on paper fastened inside an enveloped or send by mail.

• The envelope containing the essay must be accompanied with a summary of the content of no more than 150 words.

• The essay must be written by a single author, signed with a pseudonym that does not result in inducing the identity of the author. There should be no type of sign that may identify the author. The option of "author" among the properties of the document of the word processor shall not result in inducing the identity of the author. If sent by email, the name of the file must be "ASEAN Essay Contest - essay - chosen pseudonym".  The jury will know the name of the author once the winner papers have been selected, for which the envelope or the file that accompanied the essay will be opened. It is possible to submit more than one essay per author.

• The essay must be accompanied with a separate close envelope identified with the pseudonym, which should contain inside a sheet informing the basic personal information of the author (first name and surname, identify document, home address, phone number, email address, graduate or student status, university affiliation, along with a brief CV). If sent by email, besides the file with the paper, there should be another file with the basic personal information of the author, named "ASEAN Essay Contest - personal information - chosen pseudonym".

• All the documents must be delivered or sent by certified post to the seat of the contest 670 Rodríguez Peña st. 3rd floor (ZIP 1020) named "ASEAN Essay Contest” or to the email address concursoensayosansea@gmail.com. They must be submitted to the 27th day of the month of September 2013 before 18hrs, as previously indicated. No essays will be accepted after that said date.

Disqualification

The partial or total failure to comply with the previously detailed guidelines entails the automatic disqualification from the Contest.

Responsibility

Participation in the Contest implies acceptance of these Rules in all its terms. The organizers reserve the right to amend without notice the terms of these Rules.

The winning essays will be intellectual property of their respective owners. The author assumes sole responsibility for the claims of any nature that may make third parties regarding the originality or for any other reason on the essay presented. The organizers reserve the right to publish the papers submitted by the participants

Evaluation


The essays will be evaluated by a jury integrated by Dra. Florencia Rubiolo, Lic. Maya Alvisa Barroso, and Lic. Ezequiel Ramoneda, academic scholars members of renowned argentine universities, with specializations which fits the theme of the Contest, together with diplomatic representatives of the Embassies of the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the Republic of Argentina. The decision of the jury will be final.


The jury will choose two winners (first and second place) for each category of undergraduate students and graduate scholars.

After the evaluation stage, the organizers will announce the results on the 25th day of the month of October 2013. The organizers will make personal communications only to the winners.
Awards

For the winning essays, the following awards are established in U.S. dollars or its equivalent in Argentina Pesos according to the official rate of National Bank of the Republic of Argentina of the day of announcement of the results:

Awards for essays for graduate scholars

1º place - prize: U$250 (two hundred fifty U.S. dollars)
2º place - prize: U$200 (two hundred U.S. dollars)

Awards for essays for undergraduate students

1º place - prize: U$175 (one hundred seventy five U.S. dollars)
2º place - prize: U$125 (one hundred twenty five U.S. dollars)

  1. es un paso muy positivo el promover a través de concursos estudios en relación a esta área del planeta, el sudeste asiático. La ASEAN es un mecanismo del sudeste asiático que avanza muy positivamente y que merece gran atención por parte de america latina y el caribe. Lamento que solamente el concurso sea para argentinos, sería una gran oportunidad que estas embajadas de estos países lo promovieran en el resto de los países latinoamericanos.
